Why the imperfect pearl wins

Baroque shapes, inherited glamour, and how to wear pearls without looking borrowed.

Perfectly round pearls whisper about rules. Baroque pearls, lumpy and luminous and each one slightly different, tell a story instead. They look found rather than bought, which is exactly the point.

Read the label

Pearl listings use many words: freshwater, cultured, shell, simulated, glass. They mean different things for price, weight and lustre. We say plainly which is which on every piece we show, and we never call a simulated pearl real.

Make it modern

Wear one irregular pearl against clean gold, or a short strand with a black knit. Pearls with denim are not a rule-break any more; they are the rule.

The heirloom effect

The best pearl pieces look like they have had a previous life. Choose warm, creamy tones over stark white, and let them sit a little off-centre.
